Professional CV Writing

The CV is your indispensable document for career advancement. This record of your employment history is often the sole evidence of what you have achieved in your working life. It must seize the employer’s attention and secure that all important interview.

Unfortunately over half of CVs that flow through our office are flawed and would be discarded immediately. From typos and jargon to eccentric fonts and impenetrable waffle, there are innumerable reasons a CV can be rejected.

Our top 5 CV tips:

  1. Two pages is perfect, definitely no more than three pages
  2. Start with a profile – make the reader want to read more
  3. Do not include too much detail about your early career unless it’s relevant (Saturday job in the Little Chef is not of interest!)
  4. Differentiate yourself from other candidates (but not by using wacky colours or fonts)
  5. Talk about achievements rather than using jargon and “management speak”
Now read the following passage:

“Seasoned professional with extensive experience of delivering results that tangibly improve organisational performance.  Strategic thinker with outstanding interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate at all levels coupled with excellent project and people management skills. Personal drive and resilience leading to the achievement of value-added results for all.”

So what is wrong with that? Firstly, it is a lot of chatter that has not mentioned any real achievements. Secondly, it is the sort of profile that appears on all CVs and does not differentiate you from any other candidates.

Everyone from board members to junior staff can make crucial errors on their CVs so consider having yours remodelled by our experts and increase your chances of landing that dream job.
