Higher Talent - Learning and Development roles

Learning and development (L&D) is an essential function within businesses. Its main goal is to support the organisation’s business success by identifying and meeting the needs for skills and knowledge, ultimately ensuring that people are competent at their jobs. The aspect of training will cover inductions, commercial training, soft skills, management development and some technical skills.

L&D also encompasses more generic soft skills development (such as communication or team work skills). Learning and development is required for the development of technical skills and to help people with their personal progression. L&D professionals can be based in a specific department, or are part of the broader HR function.

Learning and development professionals work with department managers to identify and evaluate training gaps, designing, developing and delivering training solutions. Sometimes they will liaise with external providers. Many different learning styles are utilised, including face-to-face training, e-learning and distance learning, mentoring and personal coaching.

As a learning & development professional, your job duties could include:

  • Working with business leaders and managers to understand the business goals, and to identify training needs and trends within the business.
  • Planning learning and development strategies.
  • Working with managers and HR professionals to identify individual and departmental performance gaps.
  • Designing, both in-house and with expert third parties, a solution which includes a blended approach to learning such as coaching, classroom training, 1-2-1 sessions, action learning & e-learning.
  • Implementing and delivering training solutions.
  • Ensuring statutory training requirements are met.
  • Monitoring and evaluating results.
